Aceast\u0103 ma\u015fin\u0103rie viermuitoare ad\u0103poste\u015fte \u201epasageri ocupan\u0163i\u201d, \u00eentre care m\u00e2nc\u0103torii de semin\u0163e de\u0163in \u00eent\u00e2ietatea: \u201eMuzicantul pocnetelor e un m\u00e2nc\u0103tor de semin\u0163e. Le sparge, individual, \u00eentre din\u0163ii din fa\u0163\u0103 \u2013 cu o mi\u015fcare asem\u0103n\u0103toare cu r\u00e2njetul \u2013 miezul e spart, coji\u0163a expulzat\u0103. Urmeaz\u0103 o mastica\u0163iune de papagal \u015fi, concomitent cu ea, alt\u0103 s\u0103m\u00e2n\u0163\u0103 e spart\u0103, triat\u0103 \u015fi a\u015fa mai departe\u201d (<sup>4<\/sup>, p. 264). M\u00e2ncatul de semin\u0163e poate fi substituit de \u201ecel mai sfor\u0103itor somn din c\u00e2te a instalat natura \u00eentr-o gur\u0103 \u015fi-n ni\u015fte n\u0103ri omene\u015fti\u201d, dar \u015fi de \u201ealcoolul c\u00e2t mai pur\u201d, materializat \u00een \u201esec\u0103ric\u0103, rachiu, votc\u0103, \u0163uic\u0103 sau o mixtur\u0103 personal\u0103\u201d \u015fi \u0163igareta ruseasc\u0103 care fa\u0163\u0103 de cea moldoveneasc\u0103 \u201ee ca Nistrul fa\u0163\u0103 de Bahlui\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acesta e trenul care puf\u0103ie \u00een inima B\u0103l\u0163iului, \u201ecel mai lugubru ora\u015f al Rom\u00e2niei, dospit parc\u0103 din nouri c\u0103zu\u0163i pe un p\u0103m\u00e2nt de ploi, de mla\u015ftini \u015fi mocirle, prin care umbl\u0103 oameni cu galo\u015fi prin\u015fi de curele peste cizme, scuip\u00e2nd semin\u0163e\u201d (<sup>4<\/sup>, p. 267).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geografia acestei provincii este schi\u0163at\u0103 prin c\u00e2teva impresii de c\u0103l\u0103torie ale Olgu\u0163ei \u00een B\u0103l\u0163i, unde iubitul ei se ad\u0103postise la sf\u00e2r\u015fitul lui iulie 1922 \u00een a\u015fteptarea definitiv\u0103rii unor formalit\u0103\u0163i notariale. T\u00e2n\u0103ra \u00eendr\u0103gostit\u0103 descoper\u0103 aici o comunitate amnezic\u0103, \u00eenstr\u0103inat\u0103 \u015fi abrutizat\u0103, ce \u00ee\u015fi salvase dup\u0103 un secol de domina\u0163ie str\u0103in\u0103 numai instinctele primare: \u201eMirosul de cizme, usturoi, mahorc\u0103 \u015fi sudoare era at\u00e2t de dens, at\u00e2t de materializat, \u00eenc\u00e2t \u00ee\u0163i venea s\u0103-l dai la o parte cu m\u00e2inile ca pe perdea, \u00eenn\u0103bu\u015fitor de grea. M\u00e2nc\u0103toarii de semin\u0163e sp\u0103rgeau \u015fi scuipau.\u201d (<sup>4<\/sup>, p. 267).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C\u0103l\u0103toria Olgu\u0163ei \u00een Basarabia este notat\u0103 mai mult senzorial, eroina fiind obligat\u0103 s\u0103 cunoasc\u0103 direct oameni din cele mai modeste straturi ale societ\u0103\u0163ii: \u201eMirosul de usturoi era vecin cu Olgu\u0163a. Apar\u0163inea respira\u0163iei unui mo\u015fnegu\u0163 al c\u0103rui cap p\u0103rea \u0163esut din pufuri de p\u0103p\u0103die.\u201d (<sup>4<\/sup>, p. 268).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prima experien\u0163\u0103 tr\u0103it\u0103 \u00een B\u0103l\u0163i se asociaz\u0103 cu noroiul g\u0103rii improvizate, care \u00eei \u00eenghite unul din pantofi, l\u0103s\u00e2ndu-i piciorul u\u015furat \u00een mod straniu: \u201eGlodul acesta era viu. Respira ca acele fioroase carnivore, care-\u015fi \u00eenchid grasele petale \u00een clipa c\u00e2nd insecta a intrat; glodul B\u0103l\u0163ilor \u00ee\u015fi \u00eenchidea buzele negre asupra pantofului desprins.\u201d (<sup>4<\/sup>, p. 272).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Impresia de groaz\u0103 evadat\u0103 din noroiul infernal este intensificat\u0103 de tabloul naturii lugubre: cer sinistru, ploi sure, p\u0103m\u00e2nt care \u201esuge via\u0163a cu buze de morm\u00e2nt\u201d, case \u201ef\u0103r\u0103 gr\u0103dini, f\u0103r\u0103 culori, \u00een ploaie \u015fi glod\u201d, \u201enicio floare, nicio verdea\u0163\u0103\u201d. Ea se adapteaz\u0103 condi\u0163iilor de via\u0163\u0103 din or\u0103\u015felul basarabean: devine nemuritoare \u00een amintirea magazinului de ghete de unde \u00ee\u015fi cump\u0103r\u0103 pantofi \u2013 \u00ee\u015fi completeaz\u0103 \u0163inuta cu \u201eo pereche de galo\u015fi, stil B\u0103l\u0163i, cu curelele de rigoare, care transformau picioarele \u00eentr-un fel de submarine\u201d. Cump\u0103r\u00e2ndu-\u015fi un lighean nou, \u00eei uime\u015fte pe to\u0163i angaja\u0163ii hotelului cu nevoile ei de igien\u0103. Dup\u0103 multe insisten\u0163e, ea ob\u0163ine dou\u0103 g\u0103le\u0163i cu ap\u0103 de ploaie, patroana hotelului fiind convins\u0103 c\u0103 sufer\u0103 de vreo boal\u0103 grav\u0103, iar ligheanul \u015fi c\u0103ld\u0103rile cu ap\u0103 ar fi destinate unui rit religios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noroiul drumurilor din B\u0103l\u0163i \u00eentins \u201e\u00een falduri somptuoase\u201d se armonizeaz\u0103 cu mizeria din camera de hotel, care mai purta mirosul precedentului pasager, \u015fi cu m\u0103rfurile de calitate \u00eendoielnic\u0103 din vitrinele pu\u0163inelor dughene, p\u0103r\u00e2nd mai degrab\u0103 ni\u015fte \u201eferestre de cavou, \u00een care se vestejeau culorile h\u0103inu\u0163elor \u015fi juc\u0103riilor unor copii mor\u0163i\u201d. Atmosfera ora\u015fului este de \u201ecenu\u015f\u0103 ud\u0103 \u015fi de rap\u0103n al v\u0103zduhului\u201d, str\u0103zile mocirloase cu b\u0103l\u0163i sc\u0103rm\u0103nate de ploaie par ni\u015fte \u201elagune secate\u201d, iar casele cu ferestre \u201emici ca ochii de porc\u201d \u2013 \u201ecufere de via\u0163\u0103 uitate nedespachetate pe umedul chei al ploilor \u015fi-al b\u0103l\u0163ilor\u201d. S\u0103r\u0103cia \u015fi mizeria din ora\u015ful basarabean \u00eei amintesc Olgu\u0163ei de alte localit\u0103\u0163i moldovene, B\u0103l\u0163i disting\u00e2ndu-se \u00eens\u0103 prin popula\u0163ia lui pestri\u0163\u0103, cu deosebire lipoveni \u015fi evrei, rom\u00e2nii p\u0103r\u00e2ndu-i a fi \u00eenstr\u0103ina\u0163i, lipsi\u0163i de identitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dac\u0103 ora\u015ful B\u0103l\u0163i nu conserv\u0103 urme ale spiritualit\u0103\u0163ii rom\u00e2ne\u015fti, casa unde Olgu\u0163a \u00eel descoper\u0103 pe Vania Dum\u015fa reflect\u0103 condi\u0163ia material\u0103 \u015fi sufleteasc\u0103 a boierimii rom\u00e2ne din B\u0103l\u0163i, dup\u0103 mai bine de un veac de domina\u0163ie rus\u0103. P\u0103r\u0103ginit\u0103, cu m\u0103rturii ale diverselor r\u0103zboaie devastatoare ce s-au derulat pe p\u0103m\u00e2nturile rom\u00e2ne\u015fti, ea \u00eel ad\u0103poste\u015fte pe Vania \u00eentr-un fost salon de recep\u0163ie cu parchetul nelustruit \u015fi \u015ftirb, cu tapetul jupuit \u015fi \u00eentunecat, ca \u201edup\u0103 un asasinat\u201d. \u00cen plafon at\u00e2rna un candelabru p\u0103tat de mu\u015fte cu becuri ca ni\u015fte lum\u00e2n\u0103ri. Mobila se rezuma la un pian negru, un scaun cu speteaz\u0103 \u00eenalt\u0103 de nuc sculptat, cu o c\u0103ptu\u015feal\u0103 verde, decolorat\u0103 \u015fi spart\u0103 \u015fi un vast birou de lemn de p\u0103r lustruit negru, unde se odihneau c\u00e2teva teancuri de c\u0103r\u0163i. Mobila tragic\u0103, \u201epe care vedeai parc\u0103 \u00eenclin\u00e2ndu-se o fa\u0163\u0103 palid\u0103 de \u0163ar, isc\u0103lind condamn\u0103ri la moarte, \u015ftiind c\u0103 destinul i-a isc\u0103lit-o \u015fi pe-a lui\u201d (<sup>4<\/sup>, p. 280), purta urme de devastare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acest spa\u0163iu, martor al umilin\u0163elor Moldovei nistrene, ad\u0103poste\u015fte momentele de fericire ale celor doi \u00eendr\u0103gosti\u0163i, \u00een acordurile muzicii lui Beethoven, Bach \u015fi Chopin, interpretate cu virtuozitate de Olgu\u0163a. Muzica tinerei pianiste r\u0103sun\u0103 din nou, ca \u00een vremurile trecute, c\u00e2nd \u00een saloanele boierimii moldovene concertau mae\u015ftrii Europei apusene. Drumul devine principalul \u201einstrument\u201d de care se serve\u015fte r\u0103t\u0103citorul pentru a-\u015fi construi itinerarul \u00een interiorul dedalic. Autorii realizeaz\u0103 o imagine complet\u0103 a parcursului labirintic. Dup\u0103 ce a b\u0103tut str\u0103zile labirintului citadin, cel care se plimb\u0103 juxtapune elementele r\u0103zle\u0163ite ale ora\u015fului sub forma unui colaj.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00cen <em>La Medeleni<\/em> traversarea ora\u015fului \u015fi orientarea spre alte orizonturi sunt logic \u00eenso\u0163ite de o explorare a spa\u0163iului intimit\u0103\u0163ii. Definit dintr-o alt\u0103 perspectiv\u0103, ora\u015ful este redus finalmente la locuin\u0163a v\u0103zut\u0103 ca o cochilie, care \u00eel protejeaz\u0103 pe cel care locuie\u015fte \u00een ea, ascunz\u00e2ndu-i dramele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00cen <em>Un ora\u015f din infern<\/em> urbea este \u201eparazitat\u0103\u201d de subiectivitatea \u015fi imaginarul scriitorului. Ora\u015ful privit duce la crearea unuia \u201eliterar\u201d prin dispunerea anumitor aspecte reale \u00een fic\u0163iune.
